Summer Schmaling is on The Ballot for State Representative

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

May 26, 2020

Halfax, MA –Summer Schmaling, a Halifax Republican, is officially on the ballot for State Representative in the 12th Plymouth District after submitting over 300 certified signatures to the Secretary of State in Boston. The 12th Plymouth District includes the towns of Duxbury, Kingston, Halifax, Middleborough, Plymouth, and Plympton, Massachusetts. Schmaling stated, “I’ve received a great deal of support and encouragementfrom voters to run for State Representative. The voters tell me taxes are too high and they want transparency on how their State Representative votes in Boston - these votes affect their families, jobs, and businesses.” Due to high taxes and over-regulation, small family-owned businesses throughout the Commonwealth are struggling to keep their doors open. Inevitably, these taxes and fees imposed on businesses get passed along to the consumer, shifting the financial burden to the taxpayer.

Schmaling continued, “My opponent voted to increase taxes by $612 million dollars in 2020. My opponent voted for less public transparency on how state legislators vote and operate committees on Beacon Hill. Our State Representatives shouldn’t hide their votes on Beacon Hill and promote secret backroom deals to pass legislation; they should encourage public debate on controversial legislation, not hide from it.”

Summer Schmaling is a resident of Halifax where she, her husband, and three children are active in the community. Summer has been involved in public service since 2013, serving on the Halifax Finance Committee, and as Chairman of the Halifax Elementary School Committee and Republican Town Committee. Summer Schmaling is a trained scientist with experience studying influenza and various viruses at the Tufts University School of Medicine. Summer’s experience conducting scientific research has strengthened her ability to problem-solve in a unique way, a skill-set which is desperately needed in the state legislature to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic. Schmaling continued, “The Covid-19 pandemic changed everything; senior citizens and elderly veterans in Massachusetts were put at risk and too many died. Where was the oversight by the Joint Committee on Elderly Affairs? Why didn’t this committee ask for an immediate investigation by the Massachusetts Attorney General? This type of inaction and incompetence cost elderly veterans and senior citizens their lives.” Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, family-owned businesses throughout Massachusetts are struggling to keep their businesses alive and taxpayers – the elderly, families and individuals – are facing difficult times paying for food, utilities, mortgages and insurance expenses. However, high taxes, fees and over-regulation implemented by the state legislature will not help our citizens or businesses recover from the pandemics economic impact. Democrats’ have little to show for their multi-decade majority in Massachusetts. The cost of living in Massachusetts is expensive, and health care and prescription medication costs are skyrocketing for senior citizens and families. Democrats on Beacon Hill haven’t delivered on their inflated promises to cut costs, but they continue to raise taxes.

The 12th Plymouth District Primary will be held on Tuesday, September 3, 2020. The General Election will be held on Tuesday, November 3, 2020.
